The Department of Chemical Engineering was formally established in August 2008. Before the establishment, the University of Ilorin has been recruiting Chemical Engineers into the Departments of Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering such that, the Department did not suffer initial problem of staffing as Chemical Engineers within the system were relocated to start the programme. Prof D.S. Ogunniyi was the pioneer Head of Department with fifteen pioneer staff (9 academics, 3 Technical, 3 Administrative). The department celebrated her tenth year anniversary with a programme on 18th December, 2018.
The Department has organized 3 Departmental lectures. The first on the 31st May 2010 with
the CEO of National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Abuja, Prof B.O. Solomon as the guest lecturer and, a second lecture between the 17th and 20th April 2011 with Dr. James O. Titiloye, an Associate Professor from the ASTON University, UK (Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering) as the guest lecturer. The third lecture was presented on 8th January, 2019 by Prof. Michael Daramola from School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
